As a scholar with an extensive background in German literature, literary theory, and philosophy ranging from the 18th to the first half of the 20th century, my work focuses on the intersections -- and thus the margins -- of both literary and socio-political critical theory, with a special angle on the environmental humanities, legal philosophy, and art criticism. Informed by both deconstructive and critical theory, my thinking highlights the paradoxes, inconsistencies, and blind spots in the works I engage with, deciphering them as indices of broader historical and social significance. A guiding thread through my work is my engagement with the complex relationship between the textual and the visual.
Drawing in part on my own experiences growing up as a child with mixed German-Lebanese heritage, considerations of issues of race, discrimination, migration, and otherness in its current and historical forms are an integral part of my teaching and research.
I have several years of experience teaching both German language courses on all levels, and higher-level courses on literature, theater, and culture. You can learn more about my research and teaching below.
